Diving in the largest natural reef in the western hemisphere

Just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, (also commonly referred to as the Great Maya Reef), the largest natural reef in the western hemisphere, second in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

The reef and surrounding area, is home to some of the world’s most amazing underwater flora, fauna and exotic sea-life, including 'tropical' fish, turtles, sharks, lobsters and the incredibly large, (but amazingly gentle), 10m long whale-shark.

CANCÚN, MEXICO

Cancun is located in Quintana Roo, where Mayan culture shines on every corner. Surrounded by the breathtaking Caribbean Sea, soft coral sands, and the striking shade of blue that emerges from its crystal-clear waters, a visit to Cancun will make you wonder whether you are dreaming.

So for those looking for the vacation of their life Cancun offers tourists of all ages a wide range of options that go well beyond your imagination.

“An Axopar allows customers a two tank dive in the morning, a swim later with whale-sharks, followed by fishing offshore on the way back to the marina. They can then choose to end the day enjoying a sunset dinner cruise on the Nichupte lagoon, and with all this happening on just one amazing day and all on the same boat!”

Even with an aft cabin, the Mayacharters team manage to fit all their scuba gear for guests comfortably on top, leaving space for walking around the entire deck.

Recently established dive-charter business, Mayacharters, is based locally in Marina Green Bay, Cancun, and is a certified PADI and SSI centre offering customers the opportunity of swimming alongside these magnificent and peaceful creatures. And this is just one of a number of water-based attractions on offer from this customer-focussed and highly safety-conscious new business.

Unlike other dive-charter businesses in the same area using large, tired and uncomfortable looking motorboats and converted fishing vessels from 30 or 40 years ago, Mayacharters marketing campaign is centred upon a more modernised and far more dynamic dive-charter experience; the result of having invested in three brand new Axopar 37’s, including a Sun-Top with aft-cabin and two full-enclosed Axopar 37 Sports Cabin versions.

All three Axopars are fast, stylish and comfortable with air-conditioning installed, and removable dive-cylinder racks on the aft-deck that can hold 10 compressed-air cylinders - ready to go at a moment’s notice - with another 10 spare cylinders stored safely inside the front cabin.

Each Axopar operates under a UK Red Ensign flag with a strict safety policy that has a maximum of 8 guests for diving, with 4 crew on board, so that maximum group size never exceeds 4 people per trained instructor/guide. When people are diving, or being professionally trained in how to dive, there are always two permanent crew remaining on board each boat at all times.

With their customers’ practical and on-board storage needs being catered for so well, we asked Mayacharters co-owners, Stephan and Andrea from Switzerland, what else was it about the design of an Axopar that suited their business so well? “They are such an ideal platform for diving. Besides being fast, stable and with a shallow draft for access to good dive locations, an Axopar 37 has a decent sea-level boarding platform and swim-ladder that enables guests with heavy equipment to step-in and return from the sea very easily, without having to haul themselves up and over a high-sided boat, when they might already be fairly tired.

“When we are cruising out, or returning back home from a dive site, guests prefer to sit forward-facing, as this is so much more pleasant and more comfortable than having to sit sideways to the direction of travel. Having an electric-flush toilet and a fresh water shower are other important aspects for the comfort of our customers, and with a completely level and fully cushioned sunbed, we find that customers love the fact they can sunbathe for as long as they want.

The perfect vessel for your activities
It has been said that the Axopar 37 is the Swiss army knife of boats, adaptable for a multitude of adventures with minimal fuss.
